World Puppetry Day : March 21
Feb 27th, 2004 by Hil

Activities are being organized internationally to celebrate World Puppetry Day on March 21st. The day is to celebrate and recognize the art of puppetry, and our association, UNIMA. Sirppa Sivori-Asp, (Finnish actress, director of puppet theatre, drama, opera and television, ex-President of UNIMA International), has written an international message for World Puppetry Day.
Puppeteers and people interested and involved in puppetry are invited to organize their own celebrations of WPD. You can email information to me for inclusion (take the ‘about me’ link at the top right-hand of the page), and check in here over the next few weeks to see what others are planning.
Do use the ‘comment’ facility below posts to add details or to respond to ideas and plans, too.
hi
im a student of architecture amd am working on a project to design a centre for puppetry art.The world of puppets captured me when i attended a week long puppet festival in delhi.ever since i have been trying to bring about ideal conditions to learn the art of puppetry and to enjoy it through my design work.
it would be very helpfull if you could give me any ideas or suggestions on the same.
Hi pallavi :-). Its an interesting question, because puppetry is such a diverse artform. It can be the simplest performance with a glove puppet, through to huge creatures operated by several people, rods and animatronics, and everything in between. Its also an artform that is often learned through individual experimentation or by apprenticeship. But there are some schools for puppetry, and I wonder if writing to some of them about their centres and experiences might help.
The Puppetry Homepage has a list of schools, and I know the Institut International de la Marionnette in Charleville, France, is thought of highly.
Here in Australia the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne has just this year started a postgraduate diploma course in puppetry. They may be worth contacting.
Hopefully others reading here might have some more ideas for you, too.
