Penguin masks and earth hour
Mar 29th, 2008 by hil

These penguin masks, being worn outside the UN Framework of Climate Change Conference in Bali last November, interested me because I liked the way the coarse gauze was so effective, while not hiding the faces. The photo is taken from our newspaper at the time, via Associated Press.
I’ve always thought a cool way of making a penguin character would be to have a head mask, but then wear a tuxedo as the rest of the costume, letting people make the penguin suit connection themselves. However no-one has ever taken me up on the suggestion!
We turned our lights off for Earth Hour tonight. It was a beautiful clear starry night.
Hope you’re having a good time at the conference. Sounds fun and crazy, visually. I think I might be overwhelmed by the Extreme Visual Stimulation.
Wanted to comment on the penguin masks. You know what stuck me on first glance? Not the cute nature of penguins but a more forbidding association with those masks worn during the plague which I never quite understood (but admittedly I never looked into). They’re shown in the biopic about Nostradamus.
Kind of fitting, though, in a way…
Yesterday our class finished in the afternoon, and I did another workshop and then saw another show, Diva, so yes, I can feel the overload building! Its kind of like feast and famine coming from fairly solitary work in quiet Canberra! Its really good, though, I’m loving it.
You know I hadn’t made that connection with the plague doctor masks, and its an arresting one. We should make more of it given a chance. I was asked to quote for a plague doctor mask a while ago, but the work didnt come through.
