In early 2005 I discovered Claire Robertson's site, Loobylu.com.Claire is an illustrator and toy maker living and working in Melbourne. She had started setting a monthly theme for any crafters who wished to participate, and she compiled pictures of the completed softies into a gallery each month. You can find the old galleries by looking through the Loobylu archives, but these they are submitted to a Flickr group instead. I've found this enjoyable to participate in, and it has been good for sparking new ideas and challenges.
