The portico looked more like a relic than that of a active church. There are very old sarcophagi, frescos and bass reliefs so worn away they were mere suggestions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5546.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-300\" alt=\"IMG_5546\" src=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5546-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside were beautifully intricate decorative mosaics pulpits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5570.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-308\" alt=\"IMG_5570\" src=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5570-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"468\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5561.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-306\" alt=\"IMG_5561\" src=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5561-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5564.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-307\" alt=\"IMG_5564\" src=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5564-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d forgotten how there are separate shrines along the side aisles of Catholic churches, and how\u00a0\u00a0ornate and graphically macabre the imagery tends to be. \u00a0I found myself thinking how appropriate the imagery in the climactic scene of Baz Luhrmann&#8217;s film adaptation of\u00a0<em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em>\u00a0was.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5555.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-317\" alt=\"IMG_5555\" src=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_5555-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We came across the Duomo in Salerno, too.
