{"id":887,"date":"2009-05-13T09:28:15","date_gmt":"2009-05-12T23:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/sdblog\/?p=887"},"modified":"2009-05-13T09:28:15","modified_gmt":"2009-05-12T23:28:15","slug":"desiree-my-dear-dead-manta-ray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/sdblog\/2009\/05\/13\/desiree-my-dear-dead-manta-ray\/","title":{"rendered":"Desir\u00e9e, my dear dead manta ray"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Manta ray by Hil, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487141301\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3546\/3487141301_bef266acb2.jpg\" alt=\"Manta ray\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the big dead manta ray prop that I made for the Street Theatre&#8217;s production of <em>Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris<\/em>.\u00a0 Sadly Desir\u00e9e &#8211; my name for her\u00a0 &#8211; was cut from the final production, but I loved making her.\u00a0 Manta rays are such awesome creatures!<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"320\" height=\"265\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QOthel4LTmQ&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QOthel4LTmQ&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Because she had a wingspan of over 2 metres, I decided chalk on the floor was a good way to start drawing up a pattern. I also bought myself a little plastic model of a manta to refer to, which turned out to be useful.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Manta ray by Hil, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487937822\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3297\/3487937822_3e6d3c98b2.jpg\" alt=\"Manta ray\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From this I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487939248\/in\/set-72157617498094838\/\">traced a pattern<\/a> onto butcher&#8217;s paper and from there onto sheets of polystyrene which were then built up and <a href=\"http:\/\/spiritsdancing.com\/sdblog\/2005\/04\/07\/instant-grab-spray-adhesive-for-polystyrene\/\">glued<\/a> into a block.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Manta ray by Hil, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487946186\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3312\/3487946186_ca239bcb7a.jpg\" alt=\"Manta ray\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487942240\/in\/set-72157617498094838\/\">insert a strip of thin plywood<\/a> into the underside right across the width of the wingspan, so that the wings would be protected from breaking, especially at the tips. I also did that with the fins that I added.<\/p>\n<p>Then much shaping with a really sharp knife, a narrow power belt\u00a0 sander, and sandpaper. I decided to keep the surface a bit rough, which often makes it easier for an audience to read.<\/p>\n<p>When I use polystyrene that will just have a painted finish I skin it with muslin first. Here you can just see some of the muslin draped over the spray adhesive can on the right.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Manta ray by Hil, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487953640\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3639\/3487953640_c76cb31440.jpg\" alt=\"Manta ray\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I usually add a little bit of latex to the first coat of paint to help make everything stick to the styrene.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Manta ray by Hil, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spiritsdancing\/3487955020\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3324\/3487955020_e0c3f5fd17.jpg\" alt=\"Manta ray\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then it&#8217;s on to colouring; for the final shading I used spray paint so that the colours merged softly.
