Snuff Puppets: Nyet Nyet’s Picnic

I wish I could be in Melbourne this weekend for Snuff Puppets‘ latest production, Nyet Nyet’s Picnic, which starts on Friday at Birrarung Marr on the banks of the Yarra.
In a collaboration between indigenous and non-indigenous artists, Nyet Nyet’s Picnic is a contemporary work that revives ancient stories from the dreamtime, and uses giant puppets, dance, and music in an exploration of local monsters, bunyips and spirit creatures. Described as a ‘genuinely scary, culturally enlightening and engaging night of theatre’, the performance is the cultural highlight of Reconciliation Week and is free to the public.
The photo above was taken by Ponch Hawkes, and there are three others here:

The Nyet Nyet Men

those look totally amazing! I wish I could go too!
I performed in Nyet Nyet’s Picnic, and it was the bomb. Thanks Snuff Puppets, see you in November. J
Hey Jason, thats cool! I’d love to know a bit more — what role did you have, what it was like if you were inside one of the big puppets, the highlights — if you feel like telling.
What are Snuff Puppets up to in November?
Cheers,

I did have a role as a hairyman at first, but it was given to another actor. But being inside it was unreal. You totally become another person, and it’s so weird looking back at yourself in the mirror while in costume. But my role’s were purely dance. I performed the ThunderDance Solo, The Swan Dance (as a black swan), and the ThunderDance at the end of the show. Hopefully Nyet Nyet’s Picnic will be back as part of the Footscray Festival in November. Keeping the fingers crossed.
