The puppets in Aardman’s new Pirates Movie

Aardman’s latest movie The Pirates! – In An Adventure With Scientists is released on 28 March, and looks like it will be lots of fun. Here are three videos that give a look at the stop motion puppets and the making process.

David Sztypuljak’s  video has some great footage of the sets, workshops and puppets. He also has an accompanying arcticle:

Andrew Bloxham talks about the complex process of creating the Pirate Captain’s luxurious beard:

And Caroline Hague, puppet and maintenance coordinator, talks about looking after the puppets.

A fat chance – UNLESS

The Lorax

The story of the commercial tie-ins to the movie adaptation of Dr. Suess’s book The Lorax is completely dispiriting. Boycot it all.

Behind the scenes: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Here are two behind-the-scenes video clips from the makers of the Fantastic Mr Fox movie, showing more of the puppet making, among other things.  In the first, Roald Dahl’s wife Felicity thinks he would have loved it.

The trailer for Fantastic Mr Fox. Hmmm.  I wish the animals didn’t have such people-like figures.

Inside all of us is a Wild Thing…

The trailer of the long awaited Spike Jonze adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are has just be released on Apple (interesting choice!).  The movie will be in theatres from 16 October 2009. It’s funny how recognizably Australian the forest and beach are in the opening sequence! I can’t tell yet if I’ll love this, but it is looking promising. For me it will probably depend on how much sentimentality has been allowed to creep in: I’m hoping for very little.
